If you have just bought a house, especially if you are a young married couple, one of the first things you will want to do is decorate your house. But as fun as decorating your house can be, it can also be overwhelming, as decorating your house can cost a lot of money. While there are plenty of ways to save money when it comes to decorating your home, shopping at garage sales is one of the best things you can do!

Oftentimes, people have garage sales and yard sales when they will be moving and do not want to move everything with them. Because of this, they are unloading items that work perfectly fine and that you can get for a better price than you could ever find elsewhere.

Of course, the idea of shopping at a garage sale is to save money, but a lot of people end up spending lots when they go to garage sales. You should go into your day of shopping with a plan, as this will keep you from spending more than you need to and ending up with lots of unnecessary stuff! If you know exactly what you are looking for, you can ignore all the “extras.”

You should also create a list of secondary items that are not necessary, but that would be nice to pick them up if you find them at a garage sale. As you become more and more accustomed to shopping at garage sales, you will find that they can be a lot like antique stores – but less expensive!

Another thing to keep an eye out for, in addition to garage sales, is estate sales; at estate sales, you can get incredible stuff for great prices. Figure out where estate sales are advertised in your area (usually in a newspaper, or online) and take advantage of them!

While you might have a desire to decorate your home using all new items, this is not always practical. But even if you have this desire to decorate with new items, consider shopping at garage sales until you have the money for the bigger shopping sprees; who knows, these “placeholders” you buy just might end up remaining with you permanently!
